Advocacy is generally described as speaking, acting and/or writing to promote and defend the rights, needs and interests of people who are disadvantaged by society. There are different ways that advocacy can make a difference for children with complex disabilities and their families.
An informal and common form of advocacy is when family members or friends act to promote and defend the wellbeing of the person they care about. Carers are often required to be advocates for their child, themselves and their families, which can be difficult and time-consuming. There are resources, services and groups that can assist and support you.
There are also services that provide formal advocacy for individuals and/or groups.
